"Good TV", in collaboration with Vision Forum and the people of Wu Dao Ying Hu Tong in Beijing welcomes you to an art exhibition based on storytelling performed live.

The exhibition "This image is no more" has been conceived in collaboration between a group of Swedish artists and members of the Chinese community. The project looks for new forms of making and perceiving art, where the art as object has been replaced by the relations and processes surrounding it.

People who live and work in the Wu Dao Ying Hu Tong have been engaged to tell stories of images drawn from memories, dreams or visions. Meaning that the exhibition consists of images only materialized in the act of storytelling. The public will find these storytellers in their everyday settings at home or at work. On request each person/storyteller performs a monologue describing their specific image.

Welcome to opening reception will take place at "illy coffee/Cafe Confucius" on Thursday the 1st of July at 19.00 - 21.00 pm.

18 young artist from the University in Bordeaux will together create an 6 1/2 hour performance that dialogues with the film A Clockwork Orange at CAPC on June 2, 2010. Inside the darkened space there will be two large screens where a slowed down version of Stanley Kubrick’s classic A Clockwork Orange is going to be projected so it makes an 6 1/2h version of the film. Next to the projection, 18 artists will perform specially created performances for the event. The performances will not reproduce the film, but to dialogue with it.

As the Dadaist poem illustrates, our day-to-day existence is rife with overlapping occurrences. The mundane is embellished by simultaneous situations which include aspects of the physical and mental, spiritual and scientific. Simultaneity is the passageway through which these notions can interact in union and explains the occurrence of things which seemingly exist in parallel, though separated by time and space. It is always in motion, both within the literal sense of society’s multi-faceted interactions and to unknown realms beyond.
The exhibition Simultaneity is an open invitation extended to you. Choose to ride with it and the co-existence of the realities you are a part of can be experienced. There is a path provided; however, the direction you take is completely up to you. There are points both within and outside of the Romanian Culture Institute where three works of art await your participation and discovery. As you wander, tune-in to the psychological intuitions which endure…there, within the artists’ works, lingers simultaneity — released.
When Herr Schulze leaves work, he steps into an elevator sounding from another time. The butcher smokes a cigarette outside his cellar door and wonders about the mysterious landscapes behind the windows on Brunnsgränd. Before the bridge at Skeppsbrokajen, the Balkan Express makes a stop at King Gustav III’s statue to daydream.

In the space of a window frame, multiple narratives take place, from people walking by on the outside to a person drinking coffee or typing at their desk on the inside. Who hasn’t stopped in the midst of their actions to wonder what the other person is doing or thinking on the other side? Based on these desires, what if you could — metaphysically speaking — create another time and space for yourself?
Science can explain how an electron can be in two places at once, but the idea that one person can exist in two places at the same time remains open to debate. However, one can argue that evidence of this phenomenon exists through accounts of individual recollections. Oana Camilleri, in her video The Places Where I Live (2007), touches upon this possibility through a visual memoir. Framed inside two windows of the Romanian Culture Institute and viewable to those passing by outside on Brunnsgränd, are two distinct landscapes from Camilleri’s life; one filmed from the fourth floor balcony of the flat where she grew up in Cluj, Romania and the other filmed from the window of the house where she lived in Camberwell, England. Each landscape is a symbolic image of how her life has been affected by factors of choice and opportunity. At the age of 18 she fled Romania after the downfall of the Berlin Wall. As Camilleri describes, although she is a part of each place, she doesn’t really belong to either one. The Places Where I Live is a personal reflection about displacement and fluctuating in-between the places where one’s identity is established. Camilleri’s work expresses something inherent to all aspects of simultaneity, in essence, its quality as an intimate process of exploration.
The architectural frameworks of the institute also provide the platform for experiencing the sound installations of Beijing-based poet and musician, Yan Jun. As stated earlier, simultaneity has a life cycle which is in a continuous state of motion in relation to time, space and those involved in the experience. Two sound installations created for the exhibition by the artist exemplify these aspects. Through overlapping soundscapes, a subjective progression takes place, beginning when one enters the building. Both One and Two (2008-10) is a duet of kissing sounds and the wind in trees performing at the entrance. Relying only on hearing with no external visual stimulation to suggest a narrative, what visions or sensations are triggered within you mentally and emotionally?
Continue inside through the hallway and you will discover Neither Three nor Four (2010), a manipulation of the mechanical sounds taken from and played within the building’s antique elevator. Position yourself within its wood paneled interior and add another dimension to the atmosphere by riding the elevator to the top floor. Through a similar situation, a passage has been created connecting you to someone in Beijing hearing the same mechanically altered sounds within another location. Without knowing this other person, you share something in common, intrinsic to the space within the elevator.
At each sound point, the presence of life and interaction is expressed, but no physical evidence can be found. In place, a layered composition is created step-by-step, elevating consciousness to a point of reality that exists within the mind’s eye. This progressive narrative constructs a reality dependent on one’s associations through emotions, thoughts or past memories in connection to the living experience of the sounds. At the threshold of contemplation, you cross the entrance into discovery. As you close the door behind you, the path never ceases.
Beyond the institute’s exterior, the merry-go-round of life presents a scenic stage for a public performance of Day Dreams II (2010), by the artist Zhifei Yang. Located at King Gustav III’s statue and contrasting the hard surface of Skeppsbrokajen, is the soft calmness of Yang sleeping on an extremely large, white pillow. Her body is almost consumed by the pillow’s voluminous size; a metaphor of how the dreaming mind and human existence are innately connected. True testimonials exist of people dreaming about a specific event while at the same time, someone else, such as a close companion, is actually living the experiences revealed in the dreamer’s mind. Are you one of these individuals? The blank surface of a pillow case will be waiting for you to pen your dream during the artist’s performance.
The intricate ways in which the unconscious mind and waking world communicate is not only a passageway into our inner thoughts, but also a powerful and mystifying experience when separated by time and space in relation to another event. In her work, Yang seeks to develop this communication into a shared network of experiences to include her own daily reflections as well as the recollection of others through archiving individual dream narratives. These collections provide the basis for the second installment of Yang’s work, a video titled Day Dreams (2009), and viewable through the web site of the Romanian Culture Institute.
If one takes the time to reflect and to recognize the ways in which our world fluctuates in rhythm, one can open the way toward unique insights, whether it is in terms of how one experiences a work of art or a new realm of possibilities which exist as an alternative dimension to our conscious world.

Vision Forum, PAI and Les’ Kurbas Center are proud to announce The Invisible Generation in Kiev.

The Invisible Generation is an ongoing contemporary art project that has appeared in different guises in Beijing, Melbourne and Shenzhen. The venues have been carefully selected due to their specific historical contexts and their perceived trajectories into the future. The project takes its starting point in performative traditions, but focuses on practices and events that cross over into other time-based activities, such as sound, film, video, literature, theatre and workshops. The project offers new situations for art and audience to meet outside of where one expects to meet an art piece or performance. The Invisible Generation allows the artists and audience to investigate how art can become a tool to shift our outlook at reality when it appears with an element of surprise.

The numerous interventions of The Invisible Generation will take many shapes and appear at many unexpected places. During three days Private Contractors (Olav Westphalen and Per Hüttner) will offer a free service to the citizens of Kiev. In three different public locations they will set up a vending table and some information placards, offering to censor books and printed matter professionally and free of charge.

Kiev artists’ collective TanzLaboratorium will stage two distinctly different projects. They drive around a group of strange aliens in an impressive SUV. When the creatures leave the car they are lead by the hand by immaculately dressed people and taken around to see all the tourist sites of the city. The group will stage heated discussions in the metro about philosophical issues - the words spoken are quoted from Plato’s dialogues.

Huang Xiaopeng will distribute posters and pamphlets around Kiev that offer new outlooks on political history and activism. He takes politically charged texts from the communist past and capitalist present that have been google-translated so many times that their message has been totally scrambled. He mixes these with explosive imagery that beckons us to believe that the content is forceful and subversive.

On a more poetic note, Kiev based artist Oksana Chepelyk will release a large number of Chinese paper lanterns in the form of skyscrapers. These will blow away in the Kiev night sky, allowing us to see the calm beauty while reflecting on how real-estate speculation affect to our daily lives.

On Friday July 2 a DJ evening will take place at the yard of Les’ Kurbas Center including Alexander Kokhanovsky, Jean-François Robardet and Klas Eriksson. Among the many events there will also be film screenings by Oksana Plysyuk, Oleg Chorniy&Gena Khmaruk and Huang Xiaopeng.

Speech and What Archive? began on a floating house on a river in Chatou at the invitation of A Constructed World.
In Melbourne Flottante, we continue to consider what is kept and why it is kept, how things may be mapped, traced or stored, the possible shape and content of an archive, who may speak and what is kept unsaid, and generally what is privileged in culture so that it is available to the future.
The exhibition is composed of a presentation element, where objects that in some way act as archives will be exhibited at Y3K, and archive development, where the curators will work on methodologies of archiving and re-presentation for the duration of the show.

Speech and What Archive? Melbourne Flottante is curated by Marie Gautier and Anna Hess (Paris) and Liv Barrett and James Deutsher (Melbourne) with the support and counsel of A Constructed World.

Please join us for the first meeting of the newly founded Ouunpo, taking place in Rome. You’re more than welcome to enroll in one of the following sections, or just drop in while the meeting is in progress.

Creation

is the first and most important section. New methods of experimentation are discussed, with descriptions and examples, and Ouunpo members will talk about new ideas for projects. A constraint can be presented by one or more Oounpo members. Many constraints can also generate complements, variations, renovations.

Rumination

is the section in which possible, ‘not yet worked out’ projects are examined. Here, ideas of new constraints are discussed, though they are still not developed enough to produce a work and, consequently, to be part of the previous section.

A part of the ruminations are also reflections on fundamental oulipian notions: constraint, potential, etc.

Erudition

is a conversation about works by non Ouunpo members. In this section works that were created before the existence of Ouunpo are presented. The authors of these works are called “plagiarizers by anticipation”.

It is not unusual that an erudition, after discussion and adaptation, leads the workshop towards one or more creations.

Action, past and Future

features Ouunpo activities around the globe. All actions that have been staged outside of the workshop (public lectures, commissions, etc) are recalled and discussed in order to be evaluated and to list the next scheduled or interventions.

Well, that’s straightforward enough!

Oounpo is the final step in If you don’t want god you’d better have a multiverse, an itinerant project which explores the concepts of time, space and the role of subjectivity. The project intends to address art as place where these concepts can be translated into form and become the location for interplay between artists, curators, academics and the public.

Ouunpo is a play upon Oulipo: Ouvroir de littérature potentielle (“workshop of potential literature"), a loose gathering of (mainly) French-speaking writers and mathematicians which seeks to create works using constrained writing techniques. It was founded in 1960 by Raymond Queneau and François Le Lionnais, while other notable members include novelists Georges Perec, Italo Calvino and Hervé Le Tellier, poet Oskar Pastior and poet/mathematician Jacques Roubaud. The group defines the term 'littérature potentielle' as: "the seeking of new structures and patterns which may be used by writers in any way they enjoy."

Constraints are used as a means of triggering ideas and inspiration. As well as established techniques, such as lipograms and palindromes, the group devises new techniques, often based on mathematical problems such as the Knight's Tour of the chess-board and permutations. Oounpo works in the same way, though its primary concern is visual art.

In the midst of the Swine-Flu pandemic where schools, theatres and most public institutions were closed, Vision Forum in collaboration with Yulia Usova and PAI in Stockholm organized a lecture series (breaking local laws by doing so). Artist Olav Westphalen and a group of students from The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm joined us and made a series of improvised and greatly enjoyable performances at Les Kurbas Theater Center. New contacts were made and old ones created (without wearing any face masks).

The Invisible Generation in Beijing and Shenzhen

The Invisible Generation is a collection of artistic interventions that spread virally across the continents of our globe. It uses the artistic and curatorial network of Vision Forum as a platform to multiply and make its way into the perception of people in public spaces of selected cities around the world. The project takes its starting point in performative traditions, but focuses on practices and events that cross over into other time-based activities as sound, film, video, literature, theatre, workshops and draws inspiration from other genres such as journalism, fashion, design and further afield from mathematics and physics.

The Invisible Generation started spreading from a base at the VCA Gallery in Melbourne in September 2009 and now the virus has arrived in Beijing and Shenzhen. Here it can be found in sonic material slipped into the desk drawers of a newspaper office (Yan Jun); carnivalesque costumes appearing in public space as temporary and wearable architectures (Natasha Rosling); a collection of lost images retold by storytellers in their everyday life (Good TV); a giant white pillow carried through the streets the Chinese capital to mirror its grandiose buildings (Yang Zhifei); re-enacted déjà vus intruding into the daily routine of subway passengers (Per Hüttner); unannounced public choreography of corruption and guilt (Dinu Li), portable zebra crossings to facilitate jaywalking (Neno Belchev) and temporary appropriation of institutions' unused spaces (Josefin Wikström and Sarah Kim). Together the interventions of The Invisible Generation in China form a multifaceted virus that infects temporality and colonizes social spaces to revitalize the very fabric of reality.

The Invisible Generation spread from OCAT (http://www.ocat.com.cn) in Shenzhen October 23-25 and will linger in various locations in Beijing throughout winter and until spring 2010.

Stephen Whitmarsh (born in Woerden, The Netherlands, 1979) graduated in 2005 in psychology from the University of Amsterdam, specializing in psychonomics and neuroimaging and now working on his PhD at the Donders Center for Cognitive Neuroimaging of the Radboud University. Although the focus of his PhD is comprehending fundamental neural mechanisms underlying meditation practices, for an adequate understanding he also considers their cultural purposes and metaphysical premises. In collaboration with the University of Amsterdam he is continuing his experiments into the relationship between quantum physics, consciousness and brain processes, having received positive attention on several international conferences dedicated to that subject.

Dr. Sofija Grandakovska, (born in Strumica, Macedonia, 1973), PhD, Department of General and Comparative Literature at the School of Philology, University Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje. Her MA thesis subjects were Intervening Aspects of the Medieval Icon, Semiotics, Theology and Abstract Art and Discourse of the Prayer. She recently completed her PhD on The Akathistos Hymn of the Mother of God in the Context of Byzantine Hymnography. Her areas of scientific interest are comparative literature and visual art, especially the semiotics of Byzantine literature and fresco painting, sacred types of discourse, anthropology, theology, and cultural heritage and contemporary culture.

Workshop in Paris: Speech and What Archive?

The first workshop for Speech and What Archive? will be held aboard la maison flottante, Centre de l'estampe et de l'art imprimé, Chatou (Cneai). La maison flottante, a floating studio designed by the Bouroullec brothers, is situated on the river Seine next to the Cneai art centre, and is their floating residency atelier.

This three-day intensive workshop is for participants of the Speech and What Archive? research project exclusively. It will create an opportunity for the group to meet, eat together, to generate knowledge from within the group and identify objectives for collaborative and individual projects.

A Constructed World will design and facilitate the workshop, art historian and curator Sébastien Pluot will run the conversation 'Theoretical Heresay' and each member of the group will speak about interests related to speech and archive.

Thanks Yane for posting the program of the symposium which sounds really inspiring. IJburg was also the location of a nice tour conducted by Thijs de Zeeuw and Frank Rietveld, as part of last year Amsterdam VF workshop on utopias / distopias.

Speaking about Amsterdam, I'll be there this week, bringing the 'birdcage' sound gallery to an empty store located in Zeedijk street. The performative intervention by dj sniff is scheduled for next saturday 04/07 and will feature as well Audrey Chen (US), Wun Thong (AU) and Byungjun Kwon (KR/NL). More info here.

Arousing Your Curiosity

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all fine and that your life, love and work provide you with satisfaction.

I am preparing for a video piece and got carried away on the wings of poetry. So even though I cannot use it in the work I want to share the text with you along with some pix from a connected performance from last year.

Love/Per

It is sitting watching its favourite plant that looks a bit like a maize stalk. The beautiful and majestic marvel grows out of soil that is mixed with digital hardware and books on logic. The traces of mouldy pages, small pieces of broken circuit board are scattered on the ground.

It can sit there for hours and watch how the equations change on its long, narrow leaves and how the muscular stalk is generating new number-series as it is vibrating in the wind.

The most rewarding moment of the day is when the sun sets and it can burn a few dried larvae in the incense module and hook the plant up to its digital interface and watch it generate more beautiful algorithms than it thought were possible.

It is watching the plant and sipping on its favourite oolong tea. The last dying rays of the sun spin through the treetops. It looks at some print-outs of the equations that the plant generates today.
“You must be very proud,” I say.
“Oh, I am.” its voice is deep and confident. There is not a twitch of surprise at hearing my voice.
“You really have achieved marvels in your garden, don’t you want to share your discoveries with the world?”
“No, not really. This is my sanctuary. I only do it for my own pleasure. I have been chasing too many rainbows in my life. Now I want to find pleasure, that's all.”
“Hmm, I like that.”
“What about you? Why do you do what you do?”
“That is a good question,” I can hear my own silence.
“And what is the answer?”
“Calm my friend, that is a very good question and I will reply when you are ready for it, OK?”

Some Inspiration - Returning to the Roots

In his seminal 1968 publication, Rabelais and his World Mikhail Bakhtin returns to the Medieval world where he finds a kind of paradise of human freedom that has been lost. He published this in the Soviet Union at the height of the cold war and he talks about the carnival and other medieval events where social structures were temporarily turned on their heads.

In the quote below he writes about the birth of the word “grotesque” which comes from a time when Roman ornaments were found in Titus’s baths, that were uncovered in the 15th century. Bakhtin writes:

“What is the character of these ornaments? They impressed the connoisseurs by the extremely fanciful, free and playful treatment of plant, animal and human forms. These forms seemed interwoven as if given birth to each other. The borderlines that divide the kingdoms of nature in the normal world were boldly infringed. Neither was there the usual static presentation of reality. There was no longer the movement of finished forms, vegetable or animal, in a finished and stable world; instead the inner movement of being itself was expressed in the passing of one form into the other, in the ever incompleted character of being. This ornamental interplay revealed an extreme lightness and freedom of artistic fantasy, a gay, almost laughing, libertinage.”

What I find so inspiring in this quote (especially the phrase in italics) is that Bakhtin in the medieval finds a reformulation of time and temporality along with a total acceptance of change. Through this reformulation of time, he finds a new form of human freedom. It goes hand in hand with the ideas of Vision Forum this year. We have to reformulate time in order to become free, be it through dreams, science or a physical journey across cultural borders.

Hello,

Within the framework of the project (Anti)Realism and in my latest solo-show in Sweden (all work shown are entitled Calabi-Yau Presents), we have carried out some public events in Liverpool, Melbourne, Rome and on the Swedish west cost. They all deal in various ways with alternative views on temporality and play with how we perceive time and space.

Many of the themes in the two exhibitions, tie in neatly with your projects and can function as a starting ground for further discussions. You find more detailed documentation on:

two hundred light years

We may be only one of millions of advanced civilizations. Unfortunately, space being spacious, the average distance between any two of these civilizations is reckoned to be at least two hundred light years, which is a great deal more than merely saying it makes it sound. It means, for a start, that even if these beings know we are here and are somehow able to see us in their telescopes, they’re watching light that left Earth two hundred years ago. So they’re not seeing you and me. They’re watching the French Revolution and Thomas Jefferson and people in silk stockings and powdered wigs – people who don’t know what an atom is, or a gene, and who make their electricity by rubbing a rod of amber with a piece of fur and think that’s quite a trick. Any message we receive from these observers is likely to begin ‘Dear Sire’, and congratulate us on the handsomeness of our horses and our mastery of whale oil. Two hundred light years is a distance so far beyond us as to be, well, just beyond us.

Timeline of Vision Forum 2009

February 09 - First draft of projects are posted on the weblog.

* March-May 09–development of projects and formulation of events.

* April 1-10 you will enrol at Linköpings universitet. This will be done online (information will be sent to you via e-mail). If you have not studied in Sweden before you need to provide your postal address, e-mail, date of birth and a scanned version of your BA or MA diploma (see how to do this below).

* June 09 – description of events sent in.

* July 09, you will be given a list of events that you can participate in during autumn 2009.

* September 09 – you pay your fee to the university (270 SEK in 2008). You also send in a short project description to the university.

* August 09-January 10 - realisation of projects and events. (Note that is also the time that you can access your budget. No reimbursements will be made before August 15.)

* January-February 10 – evaluation.

Routine for reimbursements of your costs and handling of receipts

The routine for reimbursements of your costs and handling of receipts has been slightly changed. Your expenditures will be reimbursed as soon you have used up your entire budget (one payment per term) and you have sent the original receipts plus one photocopy to Per:

2. Make two photocopies of the sheet(s). (Keep one for your own reference and send one to Per)

3. Make an excel-file where you sum up all your costs and convert to Swedish kronor. You can make conversions on www.xe.com/ucc . Make sure that the numbers of the receipts correspond to your list.

Vision Forum 2009

Vision Forum is an experimental think tank which provides an informal, open platform for developing new ways to expand and enrich contemporary culture. The forum offers a group of cultural practioners the opportunity to get together to share experiences and to deepen their own curatorial or artistic practices through inter-disciplinary projects and collaborative networking. The emphasis is on a visionary, rather than critical, and practical, rather than analytical, approach.

In its first year, Vision Forum participants examined visionary strategies in architecture, artistic production and curatorial practice. Meetings and events took place in Guangzhou, Amsterdam, Rome, Zürich, Norrköping and Stockholm.

In 2009, its second year, Vision Forum will investigate time and temporality. Using contemporary theories outside the field of art (including mathematics, physics and pyschoanalysis), Vision Forum will develop alternative strategies and visionary ways to think about time and to push the boundaries of art. Through research, discussion and production, Vision Forum will explore the theory of the ‘multiverse’ and imaginary time.
